Welcome to the North American Forest Commission
Exotic Pest Information System.
ExFor is a joint project of the member organizations of the Insect and Disease Study Group of the North American Forest Commission (NAFC), which includes the Canadian Forest Service; Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA); Sanidad Forestal, Mexico (SEMARNAT); United States Department of Agriculture (USDA); Forest Service (FS); and the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
There are two levels of participation in the ExFor project. Anyone may search the pest database and obtain pest records on any of the species included in the database (Go to Pest Search). Visitors need not create a login and register at this level. Only registered users may create or review a record online (Create a Pest Record).
Go to Pest Search will take you to a page where you can search for a pest, or host species (either by their common or scientific names), Ecoregion, risk rating, or author. Once you’ve selected your pest, you can either download the official pest report (Adobe pdf), or investigate the pest further on ExFor, vis-à-vis a row of clickable banner buttons:
Screening Addresses the pest’s presence in North America and its potential to cause economic harm.
Identification Describes taxonomy and scientific and common nomenclature, plus distinguishing traits, markings and damage signatures.
Hosts Lists genus, species, sub-specific taxon and common name of the pest’s known host plants.
Distribution Displays an interactive world map of the pest’s native and non-native ranges.
Potential Dist. Displays a world map of the pest’s potential distribution.
Biology Offers details on population and dispersal dynamics, temperature ranges for viability, habitat and optimal host plant conditions.
Bibliography Comprehensive and scrollable by primary author.
Risk & Impact Lists and rates (scale of 1 to 5) the pest’s potential to establish and spread in North America, and cause economic and environmental damage.
Evaluation Assigns a numerical rating to the pest’s risk potential to North America and the level of certainty there is about the risk.
Links List of websites (URLs) with pest-specific information.
Updates Displays any new information (records) that have been appended to the official record since it was published on ExFor.
